Matamoras, PA, Letter Carrier Joseph Biss, center, receives a certificate from Central Pennsylvania District Safety Manager Richard Gentile, left, and Postmaster David Torres.

Letter Carrier Joseph Biss was returning to the Matamoras, PA, Post Office recently when he spotted a car traveling down the wrong side of the road. Flames and smoke were coming out of the vehicle, which crashed into a tree.

The driver got out of the car, but a woman was trapped in the passenger seat.

Biss rushed to the vehicle. After determining it was safe to do so, he helped the woman escape and carried her to an ambulance.

Moments later, the car was engulfed in flames.

Biss later learned the woman has multiple sclerosis and uses a cane.

Postmaster David Torres told the Pocono Record that Biss is a local hero.

“We just want to recognize and thank him,” Torres said.
