The Postal Service has released Soda Fountain Favorites, a booklet of 20 stamps that showcase cold, sweet treats.
The stamps feature five different illustrations: a double-scoop ice cream cone, an egg cream, a banana split, a root beer float and a hot fudge sundae.
“It is our hope at the United States Postal Service that the stamps we are issuing today will spur nostalgia in everyone mailing or receiving postcards, letters and packages,” said Employee Resource Management VP Nancy Rettinhouse, who dedicated the stamps June 30 at a soda shop in Nashville, TN.
Other participants in the ceremony included Rob Hatchett, a Postal Service employee, and a local Girl Scout troop whose members read essays they wrote about their favorite soda fountain treats.
The stamps celebrate the ice cream delicacies that became staples of soda fountains amid the rise of refrigeration at the turn of the 20th century. Although the number of soda fountains had dramatically decreased by the 1960s, soda fountain culture lives on in many restaurants and ice cream parlors.
