USPS is reminding employees about the Zika virus, which has been identified in several parts of the world, including Florida and the Caribbean.

Symptoms include fever, joint pain, muscle aches, rash and red eyes. Most people will not experience symptoms, and those who do will have mild symptoms for a few days.

The illness has also been linked to severe birth defects in women who contracted Zika while pregnant.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns pregnant women and those trying to become pregnant to avoid exposure.

Pregnant women who reside in areas where Zika is present or return from travel to these areas should follow up with a doctor.

Individuals who intend to travel to affected areas and employees who work in these areas should take appropriate steps to avoid mosquito bites.

Here are some tips:

  • Use Environmental Protection Agency-approved insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.
  • When camping or hiking, use permethrin-treated clothing and gear, such as boots, pants, socks and tents.
  • Empty standing water at your home and office.

The CDC’s site has more information. Employees with additional questions should contact their health care provider.
