New Mexico Post Office honors Smokey Bear

Smokey Bear unveiled the postmark recently in Capitan, NM.

The Capitan, NM, Post Office is celebrating Smokey Bear’s 71st birthday with a commemorative postmark.The free postmark features an image of the iconic mascot wearing his familiar park ranger hat. Smokey Bear was created in 1944 to raise public awareness of the dangers of forest fires and how to prevent them.“We’re proud to be able to help celebrate Smokey’s importance to our community and to the entire country,” said Postmaster Ralph Griffo.

The postmark is part of the Postmark America program, which honors individual tourist attractions, towns and regions.

Customers can obtain the postmark by bringing any stamped envelope or card to the Post Office.
