‘Remarkable response’

Postal Service’s performance praised during Katrina

USPS employees help customers at a New Orleans postal annex in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

USPS avoided many of the pitfalls that bedeviled other agencies during the Hurricane Katrina disaster, according to a new retrospective in Government Executive magazine.

The article praises the Postal Service’s “remarkable response” to the storm, which wreaked havoc on the Gulf Coast states 10 years ago.

In addition to keeping the mail moving throughout the crisis, USPS is credited with offering employees a safety net and helping restore “a sense of normalcy” to customers’ daily lives.

Government Executive’s Katrina coverage also includes an oral history with officials who witnessed the storm and its aftermath.
