Postal Service employees are continuing to move the mail despite powerful snowstorms in Michigan, Indiana and other parts of the Midwest in recent days.
Heavy snow from Chicago to St. Louis has brought traffic to a standstill and prompted schools, businesses and government offices to close. More snow is expected this week.
USPS is delivering mail where it’s safe to do so, although employee safety comes first. Letter carriers are being cautious, said Midland, MI, Officer in Charge Paul Borninski.
“We provide the carriers with weather gear for all conditions,” Borninski told the local CBS station. “With the severe weather we’re getting, they’re provided ice cleats for the slippery, icy days.”
The storm is the latest example of extreme weather to strike the nation this winter. Heavy snowfalls pummeled the Eastern and Western states in January and February.
The Postal Service asks customers to clear snow and ice from walkways to make their mailboxes accessible.
If USPS can reach a box safely, customers will receive their mail, said Clare, MI, Letter Carrier Jon Conley.
“We make every attempt to deliver mail,” Conley said.
