March 17 holiday to fuel card, online sales

Consumers are expected to spend more than $4 billion on St. Patrick’s Day this year.

Retailers are poised to collect a lot of green this St. Patrick’s Day.

Consumer spending for the March 17 holiday is expected to reach $4.4 billion, the National Retail Federation reported this week.

Greeting cards will be one of the most popular items, representing 11 percent of all purchases. Almost 7 percent of total sales will be made online, which could drive package volumes in the shipping sector.

“With the winter holidays behind us and spring flowers starting to bloom, St. Patrick’s Day provides a perfect opportunity for Americans to get together to celebrate with friends and family,” said Matthew Shay, the federation’s president and chief executive.
