Survey shows greeting cards remain popular

Consumers spent as much as $8 billion on greeting cards annually, a study has found.

Although First-Class Mail volumes have dropped in recent years, a new survey shows greeting cards remain popular with consumers.

Survey respondents said they buy more than 16 cards per year, according to the research by Gifts and Decorative Accessories, an industry trade publication.

Ninety-two percent of respondents purchase at least one card each year, and 5 percent purchase 50 or more.

Overall, consumers spend as much as $8 billion on cards each year, the survey found.

Birthdays are the top occasion for greeting cards, accounting for 86 percent of card purchases, according to the results, which were reported by the Greeting Card Association.
