President Obama has ordered flags flown at half-staff to honor victims of the June 12 shooting in Orlando, FL.

Flags should be flown at half-staff until sunset June 16.

To fly the flag at half-staff, hoist the flag to the peak for an instant and then lower it to the half-staff position. The flag should be raised to the peak again before it’s lowered for the day.

Additionally, the Postal Service reminds managers and supervisors that June 14 is Flag Day, one of six days each year that postal facilities are required to fly the POW-MIA flag.

The POW-MIA flag honors the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces held as prisoners of war or listed as missing in action. The POW-MIA flag must fly below the U.S. flag.

In light of the president’s order, the POW-MIA flag should be flown at half-staff June 14.

For additional information, refer to the Postal Service’s guidelines on U.S. flag display and maintenance.
