Veterans Day has always had a special significance to the Postal Service, as we are one of the nation’s largest employers of veterans. President John F. Kennedy said of our ancestors who fought to preserve American ideals: “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”
This is indeed true of our veterans; they have lived out the words of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States to preserve our nation’s freedom.
Please join me Nov. 11 as we honor those who served in our military to protect and defend our country. I would personally like to thank the more than 113,000 veterans who are currently Postal Service employees. Nearly 18 percent of our workforce, or 1 in 5 employees, are veterans, with many serving in leadership roles.
While we recognize our colleagues who are veterans year-round, Veterans Day is a significant time to salute them and take time to reflect upon their contributions. As we prepare to honor Veterans Day, I would ask that all postal employees please thank their colleagues and others who have served in the military.
To recognize and honor their service, this year we are providing our employee veterans with a special lapel pin. When you see this pin, you will know you have a friend and colleague who served our great nation and helped protect our freedom.
On behalf of the Postal Service, let me say to our veterans of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard: Thank you for helping to keep America safe. I appreciate your dedication and hard work as well as the work of all postal employees.
Let us all extend our gratitude and hope to our veterans that they take pride in their achievements this Veterans Day.
