The Postal Inspection Service is reminding customers to protect their mail following recent theft reports across the nation.
For example, two people were arrested in Colorado last week after attempting to cash checks stolen from the mail.
Inspectors are investigating similar cases in Florida, Pennsylvania and other states.
To prevent mail theft, the Inspection Service offers customers these tips:
• Don’t leave your mail unattended. If you’re going to be away for an extended period, ask USPS to hold your mail.
• Retrieve your mail promptly after delivery. Don’t leave mail in your box overnight. If you’re expecting checks, credit cards or similar items, ask a trusted friend to pick up your mail.
• Never mail cash.
• If you move, tell USPS. Immediately notify your Post Office when you change your address.
• Start a neighborhood watch program. By exchanging work and vacation schedules with trusted neighbors, you can watch one another’s mailboxes.
• Know the rules. Consult with your Post Office for current regulations on mailboxes, including the availability of locked, centralized and curbside mailboxes.
Vigilance is essential to combating mail-related crimes, according to Postal Inspector JerVay Rodgers.
“We can’t do the job alone,” she said. “You can be a target, but you don’t have to be a victim.”
