A Postal Service retail associate is making news after marking his 50th year on the job.

Washington, DC, Retail Associate David Gaskins was honored with a surprise party this month after a customer found out about his golden anniversary.

“I appreciate being appreciated,” Gaskins said. “I just try to follow the golden rule and treat people the way I’d like to be treated.”

The celebration was covered on local TV news and featured surprises from family, customers, co-workers and even a DC City Council member who presented Gaskins with a letter of recognition.

Aurelia Roman, the customer who organized the party, said Gaskins has a reputation for excellent customer service.

“He always treats you as if you’re the most important customer,” Roman said.

Gaskins was stunned by the outpouring of support.

“It’s kind of overwhelming with the kindness people have shown,” he said. “I just try to do my job and make things go a bit smoother.”
