To help celebrate the new Mississippi Statehood and Nebraska Statehood stamps, “The list” looks at interesting facts about each state.
1. Both states have long histories. Mississippi entered the union Dec. 10, 1817, becoming the 20th state. Nebraska became the 37th state March 1, 1867.
2. Nebraska is larger, geographically speaking. Its total area is more than 77,000 square miles, compared to more than 48,000 square miles in Mississippi.
3. Mississippi has more people. Its estimated population is about 2.9 million, while Nebraska is home to an estimated 1.9 million people.
4. Both states have produced famous Americans. Notable Nebraskans include Fred Astaire, Henry Fonda and Johnny Carson. Memorable Mississippians include B.B. King, Bo Diddley and Tennessee Williams.
5. Both stamps are in good company. Nebraska and Mississippi join a long list of previous Statehood stamps, including Indiana (2016), Nevada (2014), West Virginia (2013) and Louisiana (2012).
