New report shows ongoing improvement

New research shows USPS has reduced greenhouse gas emissions, including emissions from postal vehicles.

The Postal Service reduced facility energy usage per square foot by 4.1 percent from 2015-2016, the recently published Annual Sustainability Report shows.

USPS also reduced scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions — which include emissions from Postal Service-owned vehicles, facilities and indirect sources such as electricity and steam — by 19.3 percent from 2008 levels.

Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions — including contract transportation, leased facilities and employee-related discharges — have dropped 2.5 percent since 2008.

Since 2007, the Postal Service has reduced its water use per square foot by more than half.

“We’ve made significant strides toward improving operational inefficiencies while limiting our impact on the environment,” Chief Sustainability Officer Tom Day said. “Continuing to streamline operations is good for business, our employees and the environment. It’s all related to bettering the bottom line.”

The report also shows USPS recycled more than 255,000 short tons of waste last year, up from 239,000 tons in 2015. Recycling is one of the organization’s sustainability priorities.

The report is available on the Sustainability Blue page.
