Delia Johnson’s day is far from over when she finishes her Postal Service route.

The Ontario, CA, letter carrier dedicates her down time to photographing athletes who participate in the Special Olympics, as well as coaches and other volunteers for the organization.

Her favorite subject is her daughter Krystal Johnson, 28, who has been a Special Olympian for more than 15 years.

Johnson received the surprise of a lifetime when one of her photos of Krystal was used on life-sized displays at the recent Special Olympics Southern California summer games.

“I’m really proud of that,” Johnson said.

Krystal was born with microcephaly, a condition in which a baby’s head is smaller than expected.

Johnson encourages her daughter to “not try a little but her hardest.” Krystal has competed in a variety of Special Olympics events and is slated to compete in track and field during next year’s national games in Seattle.

Customer Services Supervisor Penny Shoemate said everyone at the Ontario Post Office is proud of Krystal, calling her “a testament to what you can achieve when you give your all.”

Shoemate is also proud of Johnson.

“When employees do something outstanding, I want them to be recognized whether it’s on or off the clock,” Shoemate said.
