A fond farewell, new data and more

Emory Townsend
Emory Townsend, who recently died, celebrated 60 years delivering on the same highway contract route in April.

Fond farewell. Emory Townsend, who delivered mail on his Somerset, CO, highway contract route for more than six decades, has died. He was 94.

The Somerset Post Office was flooded with letters and packages for Townsend during a career celebration in April.

“I’m learning what he was to people in this valley and people all over,” Townsend’s daughter, Patricia Shaffer, told the Denver Post. “He had a very interesting life and I think that’s just because he never quit living.”

Semiannual report. The Postal Service’s auditor recently completed more than 1,500 investigations that led to 430 arrests and almost $68 million in fines, restitutions and recoveries.

The data is included in the Office of Inspector General’s Semiannual Report to Congress, which covers a six-month period ending Sept. 30.

USPS accepted 83 percent of the agency’s recommendations. The Office of Inspector General’s site has more information.
