Video celebrates United States Air Mail stamp

Highlights from the recent United States Air Mail stamp dedication ceremony are featured in a new video from the Postal Service.

The 1-ounce domestic stamp commemorates the first airmail flights performed by Army Signal Corps pilots in May 1918. A second stamp, which will mark the Post Office Department’s takeover of the service later that year, will be released in August.

“I don’t think anybody could have imagined the significance those flights would have on future air travel. Today’s commercial aviation industry is a direct result of the Post Office’s vision a century ago,” Elliot Gruber, director of the National Postal Museum, says in the video.

The 1-minute, 22-second video also includes remarks from Supply Management Vice President Susan Brownell and Chris Karpenko, the Postal Service’s brand marketing executive director.

The museum hosted the stamp dedication ceremony last month.
