Now that many schools are back in session, USPS is reminding employees to keep an eye out for children while operating motor vehicles.
Drivers must take extra precautions to avoid accidents by staying alert and driving defensively. Children can be unpredictable and don’t always look both ways before crossing streets.
While driving, remember to:
- Slow down and obey speed limits
- Adjust mirrors to be able to see around your vehicle
- Avoid backing up your vehicle
- Avoid distracted driving
When approaching a school zone, watch for yellow flashing lights indicating that you must reduce your speed to the posted limit. Don’t attempt to pass or change lanes.
Slow down when approaching a school bus. A stopped bus with flashing red lights or its stop sign extended means children are getting on or off the bus.
Vehicles on both sides of the street must stop at least 10 feet away from the bus, until all children have safely entered and exited the vehicle. Drivers must remain stopped until the bus begins to move.
