Postal Service employees will accept, process and deliver tens of millions of mailpieces and packages during the final stretch of this year’s holiday season.
The organization is on track to deliver about 13 billion mailpieces and 800 million packages between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. Many employees said they are working to provide excellent service, knowing this is the most important time of the year for USPS.
“If you take the time to meet the needs of the customer, they will come back again and again, not just through the holidays, but all year long,” said Yonika Porritt-Ledbetter, a Warren, MI, retail associate.
To handle this year’s spike in volumes, the Postal Service has added extra help, expanded Sunday package deliveries in several cities and deployed new package sorting equipment at some plants.
In addition to moving the mail, employees are promoting the Postal Service during appearances in the news media and at community events.
Workers also spent the final days of the season promoting Operation Santa, a program that allows workers and customers to fulfill the holiday wishes of families in need.
Customers are expressing their appreciation in ways large and small.
In Tampa, FL, John Potts, a letter carrier, was surprised when he arrived at a doorstep to deliver packages, only to discover the residents had left him a thank-you note and bottled water.
“Even though you get paid to do your job, it’s nice that someone notices that you do something that counts for them,” Potts said.
