The road ahead

Effort to add tractor-trailer operators begins

Myrna Mendoza is a USPS tractor-trailer operator based at the Santa Ana, CA, Processing and Distribution Center.

The Postal Service is seeking new ways to fill tractor-trailer operator positions.

The organization will soon begin a pilot program to add more of these employees, who play an important role in transporting mail from processing and distribution centers to other facilities in the postal network.

The pilot will be geared toward existing motor vehicle operators (MVOs) who wish to become tractor-trailer operators.

USPS will work with truck driving schools in various locations to offer approximately 152 hours of curriculum to train volunteer MVOs. Once the MVO completes the courses and required licensing, they will spend 80 hours operating tractor-trailers for USPS.

If the MVO meets expectations, they will have an opportunity to move into a tractor-trailer operator role permanently.

The pilot program will be available to MVOs from the following locations:

• San Jose, CA, Processing and Distribution Center
• San Bernardino, CA, Processing and Distribution Center
• New Jersey Network Distribution Center
• Brooklyn, NY, Processing and Distribution Center
• Industry, CA, Processing and Distribution Center
• Sacramento, CA, Processing and Distribution Center
• Miami Processing and Distribution Center
• North Texas Processing and Distribution Center
• Seattle Processing and Distribution Center
• Morgan, NY, Processing and Distribution Center
• Carol Stream, IL, Processing and Distribution Center
• Fox Valley, IL, Processing and Distribution Center
• Minneapolis Processing and Distribution Center
• St. Paul, MN, Processing and Distribution Center

MVOs at these locations who want more information should speak to the facility’s transportation manager or Human Resources office.
