ZIP ties

Their number was up — and Gambier, OH, couldn’t have been happier.

The rural village, home to Kenyon College, celebrated its “date matches ZIP” day on April 30 with games, activities, festive foods and a parade.

A ceremony on the steps of the Post Office — where town and gown have mixed for decades — included a proclamation making the day official from Mayor Leeman Kessler, as well as comments from local postal workers.

A poem was written and read for the occasion by Royal Rhodes, professor emeritus of religious studies at the college.

The denizens of 43022 do not take their Post Office for granted. It is an integral part of town and student life, according to David Hoyt, a writer and news director for the college’s Office of Communications.

“During first-year orientation, every Kenyon student is assigned a PO Box,” Hoyt said, adding that many students “come to know and love the dedicated employees.”

Kenyon alumni around the country joined the festivities in spirit, with 43022 gatherings held in at least 10 other cities, including Atlanta, New York, Philadelphia and San Francisco.

So beloved is it as an institution that the Gambier Post Office was named “Citizen of the Year” at the town’s Independence Day festival in 2020.

“In such a small village, the Post Office remains an important community hub,” Hoyt said.

Stormwater policy reminder

USPS is reminding employees and contractors to prevent hazardous chemicals from entering the environment and waterways when washing postal vehicles outside.

The organization’s zero discharge policy prohibits postal employees and contractors from releasing oil, grease, metals, acids and other pollutants into outdoor drains and stormwater systems.

When washing vehicles outside, employees and contractors must:

• Use either dry wash or high-vapor steam techniques (no wash water generated) or a wet wash with wash water collected or contained, vacuumed into a tank or container and transported off site for proper wastewater management.

• Use a covered area that is protected from stormwater run-on and runoff when washing vehicles in the rain.

• Not release or discharge any wash water or pollutants into stormwater systems.

The Vehicle Washing Requirements Environmental Compliance Bulletin and on the Environmental Compliance Blue page has additional information.

Facilities can establish vehicle washing contracts through the Vehicles, Delivery and Industrial Equipment Category Management Center.

Take charge

The Postal Service is reminding employees who have been issued a Citibank GSA SmartPay 3 card to only use them for official USPS business-related travel expenses.

The cards allow employees who travel on postal business to receive government-rate airfares and hotel accommodations.

However, the cards should never be used:

• For another employee’s travel expenses.

• To put air itineraries or hotels on hold for other employees.

• For personal, family or household expenses.

• To withdraw cash from an ATM, unless on international travel.

Additionally, when booking travel, employees must use Omega World Travel/GetThere, the Postal Service’s contracted travel management company.

Booking reservations through other travel service providers is against policy and prevents the organization from fulfilling certain contractual obligations and from receiving discounts and rebates.

Employees should also:

• File expense reports as soon as possible after travel is complete.

• Notify their travel card coordinator and Citibank if a card is lost or stolen.

• Promptly report changes of address or name changes to their travel card coordinator and Citibank.

• Notify travel card coordinators about job changes.

• Dispute any charges that are incorrect.

Additionally, employees should always secure their government travel card as if it were a personal credit card.

To request a travel card, ask your travel card coordinator for an application, have the completed application approved by an approving official and return it to the coordinator for processing.

Cards usually arrive in two weeks.
