Eight employees at the Hawkeye District office in Des Moines, IA, were recently recognized for coming to the aid of a colleague, Western Area Mailpiece Design Analyst Kirk Petty, when he experienced a life-threatening medical emergency in February.

Address Management System Technician Kelly Snyder and Health and Resource Management Specialist Jody Paullin discovered Petty in distress at his desk.

Snyder and Paullin immediately alerted others. While emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, Petty received first aid — including CPR chest compressions and AED treatment — from a team comprising Safety Specialist Bradley Barkley, operations programs specialists Deborah Buntz and Brenda Cowles, Rural Carrier Russell Jacobson, Address Management System Technician Denise Marean and Office of Inspector General Special Agent Lori Wignall.

Paramedics soon arrived and took Petty to a hospital, where doctors credited his co-workers with saving his life.

“Due to the heroic efforts of his colleagues, Kirk is recovering from his ordeal,” said Acting District Manager Sam Reed. “His guardian angels were definitely on duty that morning. Many thanks go out to Kirk’s postal family.”
