Anthem, which operates Blue Cross Blue Shield programs in several states, reported a massive data breach Feb. 6 that may have exposed the personal information of 80 million people.
Hackers may have gained access to current and former members’ names, birthdates, medical IDs, Social Security numbers, street addresses, email addresses and employment information, including income data.
Credit card and medical information weren’t compromised.
Anthem asks members to:
- Visit Anthem’s website for updates and answers to frequently asked questions.
- Sign up for identity protection offered by Anthem.
- Obtain a free credit report from a reputable credit reporting company.
- Call Anthem at 877-263-7995 for additional information.
News coverage of the breach has triggered several email phishing scams in which criminals posing as legitimate businesses offer to sign up Anthem members for credit protection.
Anyone who receives such offers should avoid them, the USPS Technology Management Office says.
