Out to lunch

Second-grader’s protest prompts response from first lady

Richard “Trip” Klibert poses with his school lunch.

When 7-year-old Richard “Trip” Klibert found the healthy changes to his school lunch unacceptable, he turned to a classic form of civil dissent: He wrote a letter to the White House.

In a handwritten note to first lady Michelle Obama, the Louisiana second-grader complained her “Let’s Move” initiative had “ruined” his school’s Taco Tuesday with healthier tortillas.

“Please bring back the old taco shell. I miss them. Also, the pizza is terrible,” Trip wrote, according to a report last week by The Times-Picayune.

The first lady responded with her own letter thanking Trip for his feedback and explaining the importance of students having healthy food in their daily lunches.

She also included an autographed Obama family picture and trading cards of the family’s dogs.

Trip was excited his letter prompted a response.

“I think he may prefer the old tacos and pizza over the whole grain, but now he knows the reasons behind the change,” Trip’s mother Katie told the newspaper.
