The Postal Service dedicated a Special Olympics World Games stamp May 9 at a regional competition in Irvine, CA.

Pacific Area VP Dean Granholm spoke during the ceremony and praised Special Olympics as an organization that “has changed the world by creating opportunities for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.”

There are almost 5 million Special Olympics athletes worldwide.

This year’s World Games will be held in Los Angeles from July 25-Aug. 2. More than 7,000 athletes, including 344 from the United States, will compete in 25 Olympic-type sports.

Granholm was joined at the dedication by Special Olympics Southern California Orange County Athlete of the Year Tony Briones, Special Olympics Southern California Chairman Tim Redmond, Special Olympics Southern California President Bill Shumard, Irvine Mayor Steven Choi and Irvine Police Commander Mike Hallinan.

Stockton, CA, Post Office Custodian Don Pericle, a Special Olympics gold medalist for tennis, also participated.

The stamp can be purchased online and at Post Offices nationwide.
