Crafty Celts, a small, family-owned jeweler in Batesburg, SC, is ringing up major sales thanks to History Channel’s popular TV drama “Vikings” and the Postal Service.
Now in its third season, the show recounts the history of a band of Norseman during the Viking Age, from the late 700s to 1066. Characters wear period costumes, accented by distinctive bracelets, rings, pendants and other jewelry designed exclusively by Crafty Celts.
Danny and Sherry Hansen own the company. They started it years ago selling simple cloak brooches “from a blanket on the ground” at Renaissance festivals.
Today hordes of “Vikings” fans and other consumers from around the world flood the company with orders for its historically correct jewelry. The company’s Facebook page has more than 200,000 ‘likes.’
Crafty Celts ship orders several times a week from the Batesburg-Leesville Post Office, using Priority Mail, Priority Mail International and International Registered Mail. Postmaster Kim Deese, a Crafty Celts fan, said the company’s business accounts for 17 percent of the office’s annual revenue.
“Last year, Crafty Celts did more than $100,000 business with us. I do everything possible to provide it with the best business solutions the Postal Service offers,” said Deese.
