Dwight Porter’s job as a Des Moines, IA, Network Distribution Center (NDC) Information Systems Supervisor doesn’t usually bring him into contact with customers.

But when he received a call about a lost parcel containing a christening dress needed the next day, he was happy to help.

Porter recorded details about the package, which was coming from Hawaii, and the customer’s contact information. He also had the customer describe what the dress looked like, in case it had separated from the package.

Porter learned the parcel had been looping in the NDC for five days due to an erroneous Postage Validation Imprinter label. Process Control Assistants Jim Barr and Bob Anderson, members of Porter’s team, searched through the NDC’s sorting machines and finally found the package in the hamper used to store mail found in the maintenance mail search.

“Your caring and willingness to help a perfect stranger is such a blessing,” the customer later wrote to Porter.
