Employees learn to generate holiday leads

The holidays are an ideal time to unwrap new business for the Postal Service, USPS leaders say.

“Many small businesses will be shipping packages during the holidays and we want them to use USPS,” Greater Boston District Manager Mike Powers said.

The district’s Business Development Team recently trained more than 300 employees on Customer Connect, a partnership with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) that encourages employees to submit sales leads.

During the training, team members and NALC representatives discussed how letter carriers can boost USPS revenue by leveraging their relationships with business customers.

“No one knows our customers better than our letter carriers,” said East Dennis, MA, Postmaster Peter Clarke, a team member and onetime letter carrier. “They are out on the street six days a week and they can see who is using any one of our shipping competitors.”

Powers encourages retail associates, rural carriers and other employees to look for new business too.

“Any one of our employees can submit a lead,” he said.

The district’s training already is paying off.

“We’ve seen an increase in Customer Connect leads already and some look pretty promising,” Marketing Manager Jim Holland said.
