Rock the post

Mail used to encourage younger voters

Voting
Get-out-the-vote organizations used postcards to help spur first-time voters to go to the polls during California’s recent primary.

Several organizations used the mail to encourage young people to vote during the recent California primary election.

About 3,000 postcards were sent to eligible voters who have turned 18 since 2016. The postcards featured personalized messages from J.J. Abrams, Lena Dunham and other producers and directors.

“Any excuse to actually write and send old-fashioned post cards is a good one. But none better than encouraging first-time voters to vote,” Abrams told The Hollywood Reporter.

Rock the Vote, a nonpartisan nonprofit that encourages young people to vote, organized the effort with Abrams’ production company, Bad Robot, along with major studios, streaming services and talent agencies.

The postcard kits used in the effort were designed by Bad Robot and included letter-pressed cards, a writing guide and social media tips.

The postcards are the latest example of how organizations are using the mail this election year. Other examples include Illinois candidates who mailed personalized letters to voters during that state’s recent primary.
