USPS offers reminder on mailing lighters

Lighters
Cigarette and utility lighters must be authorized to enter the mailstream via surface transportation.

The Postal Service wants employees and customers to remember that cigarette and utility lighters must be authorized to enter the mailstream via surface transportation, such as USPS Retail Ground or Parcel Select.

Cigarette and utility lighters are prohibited from air transportation — such as Priority Mail, First-Class Mail and First-Class Package Service — and from displaying U.S. Department of Transportation flammable gas warning labels.

Under the mailing standards in Publication 52, Hazardous, Restricted, and Perishable Mail, section 343.25, approval to mail new lighters containing flammable gas in their original packaging is only extended to lighter manufacturers and their authorized distributors when they provide the USPS Pricing and Classification Service Center with specific documentation.

Employees who have questions can email the Pricing and Classification Service Center at PCSC@usps.gov or call 212-330-5300.
