The Postal Service will release a stamp Saturday, Feb. 23, to mark Alabama’s bicentennial.
Alabama became the 22nd state Dec. 14, 1819.
Alabama’s history includes its settlement by European colonists and its participation in the nation’s space program.
The state also was at the center of many important events in the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, including the 1965 Voting Rights March from Selma to Montgomery, a route now commemorated as a national historic trail.
The Alabama Statehood stamp features a striking image of a sunset taken on the Pulpit Rock Trail in Cheaha State Park by photographer Joe Miller. The stamp was designed by Greg Breeding and William Gicker, USPS art directors.
The stamp will be available at Post Offices and usps.com.
