USPS will release stamps honoring the influential children’s series on Saturday, June 22.
The stamps will help mark the 50th anniversary of the show, which debuted in 1969 and forever changed children’s television through its combination of educational and entertainment content.
The series introduced audiences to beloved characters like Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, and Bert and Ernie.
Backed by research and testing, the “Sesame Street” creative team has continually aimed to develop a compelling curriculum for preschool-age kids that also appeals to their parents. The award-winning and critically acclaimed series has remained experimental, each year researching what issues are affecting kids and adapting to cultural and social trends.
The stamps showcase 16 characters: Big Bird, Ernie, Bert, Cookie Monster, Rosita, The Count, Oscar the Grouch, Abby Cadabby, Herry Monster, Julia, Guy Smiley, Snuffleupagus, Elmo, Telly, Grover and Zoe.
An image of nine characters appears on the right side of the stamp pane, while the back of the pane features anniversary artwork. Derry Noyes, a USPS art director, designed the stamps.
The Postal Service will dedicate the stamps June 22 in Detroit. The ceremony will be held immediately before one stop on the “Sesame Street Road Trip,” a celebration of the show’s golden anniversary that will be held in 10 cities across the United States.
