Christopher Barnes, a Brodhead, KY, rural carrier associate, has used the Rural Reach program to generate more than $200,000 in USPS revenue.

A Kentucky employee’s sales tips have led to more than $200,000 in new estimated annualized revenue for the Postal Service.

Christopher Barnes, a rural carrier associate in Brodhead, has submitted multiple leads this fiscal year through Rural Reach, a program that encourages rural carriers to take advantage of their relationships with small-business customers to find new sources of revenue for USPS.

“I believe if you take care of your customers, they’ll take care of you,” said Barnes. “If you’re honest in answering their questions, they will tend to use our products and services.”

Sales generated from Rural Reach leads count toward the Postal Service’s Power of One campaign to raise revenue through sales leads from employees.

“Rural carriers know their route and their customers,” said Mary Anderson, small-business engagement director at USPS headquarters in Washington, DC. “If they see a competitor’s truck, they know that’s an opportunity to strike up a conversation about what we have to offer.”

The Postal Service is encouraging as many employees as possible to submit at least one lead through any of its six lead programs by Sept. 30. The Small Business Sales team is tracking program participation rates through its weekly “Drive to 35” downloadable report.
