Solar power

The Postal Service will celebrate the massive, radiant star that sits at the center of our solar system with the June 18 release of the Sun Science stamps.

The only star that humans can observe in detail, the sun is a vital source of information about the universe.

The Forever stamps will feature 10 stunning images of the sun taken by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, a spacecraft that keeps a constant watch on solar activity, capturing images in ultraviolet light wavelengths not visible to the eye.

Antonio Alcalá designed the stamps, which use black-and-white images colorized by NASA to reveal specific features of the sun, including churning magnetic fields, plasma blasts, flares and other solar activity.

The Sun Science stamps will be available at Post Offices and
