The Postal Service is reminding employees not to share personal information that is protected by the Privacy Act of 1974.
Personal information may only be shared:
• With fellow employees, including postal contractors, if they have a need to know the information to perform their job duties.
• In response to a valid Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request received through the Postal Service’s official FOIA process and approved by the Law Department.
• In response to a request from law enforcement or Congress; a court order; or through the USPS Law Department or the Government Relations and Public Policy Department.
• Under certain other limited circumstances, with guidance from the USPS Privacy and Records Management Office.
