Fly flags at half-staff to honor O’Connor

In memory of retired Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, USPS facilities should fly flags at half-staff until sunset on Dec. 19.

President Joe Biden has ordered U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff on Tuesday, Dec. 19, to honor Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman on the Supreme Court, who died Dec. 1.

Flags should be flown at half-staff until sunset on Dec. 19.

To fly the flag at half-staff, hoist the flag to the peak for an instant and then lower it to the half-staff position. The flag should be raised to the peak again before it’s lowered for the day.

The USPS Administrative Support Manual has additional guidelines on U.S. flag display and maintenance.
