Bomb, away!

Coatesville, PA, Letter Carrier Dion Carotenuto

Coatesville, PA, Letter Carrier Dion Carotenuto was delivering mail earlier this year in nearby Caln Township when he spotted an alarming sight: an undetonated pipe bomb on the ground in a customer’s yard, near a school-bus stop.

Carotenuto immediately called 911.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene, secured the vicinity and safely removed the explosive device before anyone was injured.

“Parents of the children in the area are calling Dion a hero,” said Coatesville Postmaster Dorothy Taylor.

Police opened an investigation into the bomb Carotenuto found, as well as a similar one that exploded the day before near a railroad underpass less than a mile away.

“It’s the one thing you don’t think you’ll find while walking around,” the Postal Service employee told the local ABC station.
