A city carrier assistant training with Letter Carrier James Burkhardt Jr. in Oakfield, NY, recently got a lesson in heroism along with guidance on delivering mail. When the assistant saw smoke coming from a home, Burkhardt immediately called 911 and grabbed a fire extinguisher from his vehicle. Burkhardt, a volunteer firefighter, kept the flames at bay until emergency responders arrived and took over.
