Letter Carrier Melissa Ende was recently delivering mail in a Buffalo, NY, neighborhood when she detected a strong odor of natural gas at a house.

Unable to make contact with anyone inside, Ende alerted her manager, who called 911.

Firefighters soon arrived, entered the residence, located a gas leak in the basement and shut off the line.

“Due to the swift actions and alertness of the carrier, both property and lives were saved,” said Buffalo Postmaster Roselle Murrell.
